The beautiful rectangle and the spiral

The Golden Spiral was first discovered by Pythagoras. The spiral is derived from the golden rectangle. When you connect a curve through the corners of these concentric rectangles, the golden spiral is formed.
This shape is found in a lot of things in nature: the Nautilus shell, the face of a sunflower, the curve of an elephant tusk, the horns of wild sheep, the spiral in a pineapple, curl in our eyelashes, our finger prints, our DNA, the shape of the Galaxy and much more. Man attempted to imitate this beauty of nature. We can see that the Sphinx and Pyramids of Giza all lie on a Golden Spiral.

He that holds fast the golden mean,
And lives contently between
The little and the great,
Feels not the wants that pinch the poor,
Nor plagues that haunt the rich man's door
.”
~William Cowper comments
